Elementary School Day Tutoring

Our elementary focus in on reading. Tutors go during the school day to work with a teacher or mentor students in a reading lab.

(Coordinated through the Foley Center for 2-3 hours per week. You need your own transportation.)

Other Tutoring Opportunities

Oldest child welfare agency in Alabama and the only Catholic agency. The residential facility provides services for abused, abandoned, and neglected children. St. Mary’s Home and the Foley Center have partnered to provide tutoring services to these children.

This children’s home offers free tutoring and afterschool programs to children in elementary school through high school. Monday-Thursday 3-5pm and Saturday (SAT/ACT tutoring) 9am-12pm.

Mentoring Programs

Boys and Girls Club

Boys & Girls Clubs of South Alabama strives to enable all young people to reach their fullest potential as productive, caring, and responsible citizens. Boys & Girls Clubs rely on their staff and volunteers to help accomplish these goals and to effectively serve the youth. They operate seven year-round clubs in Mobile County, (including the Cody Road Branch) which serve youth ages six-eighteen. Through these clubs, members learn and develop new skills in five areas: Character and Leadership Development; Education and Career Development; Health and Life Skills; The Arts; Sports, Fitness, and Recreation. They work to create a safe and positive environment for our club members, in addition to building supportive relationships and opportunities for success.

It is recommended students have their own transportation.

There are three locations for this site; students will choose one for their service commitment.

Dearborn YMCA

Dumas Wesley Community Center

Serving the community since 1903 The mission of the Dumas Wesley Community Center of Mobile, Alabama is to EDUCATE, EMPOWER and ENRICH our local community through collaborative programs of Christian service that: Provide for immediate human needs, Strengthen family life, Develop leadership and encourage personal responsibility.

Light of the Village

Light of the Village is a front-line, hands-on Christian ministry designed to share Christ’s message of faith, hope, and love to the inner city. They strive to provide a consistent presence where the love of Christ can be discovered and remember they serve individual people, all with unique obstacles, challenges, talents and dreams. Student volunteer serve in the Chickasaw afterschool program with elementary and middle school age children.

Students must have their own transportation.

Time of Service: Tuesdays and Thursdays 2:30-5 p.m.

Stepping Up, Strickland Youth Center

The James T. Strickland Youth Center is home to the Mobile County Juvenile Court and Mobile County Juvenile Detention Center. One goal of this tutoring program is to help children and youth to keep up with their studies while they are residents in the detention center. The secondary goal is for tutors to encourage a sense of self worth in the resident, a belief in their potential for success, and the determination to thrive that will help these young people refrain from being shuffled in and out of the criminal justice system for the rest of their lives as statistics suggest.

Taylor Park Recreation Center

Taylor Park is a Community Center which offers a safe, positive haven for Inner City children and young adults of Mobile, AL. Through educational support, recreation, and mentoring students help to build the trust, skills, and self esteem that are essential to the success of any developing child.

Students should have their own transportation.

Trinity Family Ministries- Deep Rootz After School Program:

Trinity Family Ministries program aims to create a safe environment where the students are allowed to express their individuality in a way that encourages their own self-awareness. Through different character building activities, the students are offered a way to explore who they are—their own unique person. The program comes alongside the students in support of their academic advancement and social and spiritual well being through tutoring and character building activities. The program is also a time where the students, volunteers and staff of Deep Rootz have fun while creating new relationships.

Time of Service: Monday (Centered strictly around academics), Tuesday (Character Enrichment through art and academics), Wednesday (Character Enrichment through Jiu Jitsu and academics) from 3-5 p.m.

LIFE at the Greenhouse / Bo Dooley

This tutoring program provides individual and group academic tutoring, academic intervention, Speech Therapy, Social Cognitive Intervention, ADHD Coaching, and ACT/SAT prep.

Meets on campus. Moorer Hall, Room 129
